I made this girl today who is homozygous for w20 and medium white factor yet I had to reroll her portrait to get her to show any white at all.

But then there's this guy I made yesterday who has w20 combined with tobiano, Splash, and minimal white factor yet shows more white then any of my other horses (most of whom are also tobiano splash with minimal or no white factor).

I'm wondering if it is recessive, since looking I found this foal is from some accidental line breeding, so more likely for recessive traits to show. Is he just usual homozygous sooty wild bay (I've heard that chocolate isn't the right color for sooty wild bay, so maybe this one is right?) or DP? I'm a bit confused as DP bays can't be registered in the Liver Breeders Club.

She's heterozygous wild bay and homozygous sooty. Is she carrying DP or is this just how double sooty looks on wild bay?

This is a stallion out of that mare and sired by a brown stud. He has both wild bay and brown and he's homozygous sooty too:

He seems really dark brown, but his tail isn't black, it's quite light silverish gray. The stallion has no silver gene. I had the second one color tested because the Breeders Club wasn't giving me all the disclosure I wanted. I knew she couldn't be silver but that was the first thing that came to my mind. She turned out to be Smokey Grullo Splash Tobiano Appaloosa ( Ee aa CCcr dD gg Ff SstyS PP KittoKit SpsSps LlpL ECA3P+ECA3P+ WF: Medium )

I decided to scan the horse community for similar cases and found quite a few:

They range from the milk chocolate to coffee to sepia. Compared to non-LP smokey black foals - who are all shades of black - with variations of sooty:

Am I safe to assume that the LP gene expressed with heterozygous cream on a black base is what makes the color turn brown-ish? If so, why does this occur? So I invested in a homozygous DP stallion at Thanksgiving.

As well as being homozygous DP, he's homozygous for sooty. He is a liver chestnut.

My question is about his babies. So I know they are all heterozygous DP from their dad. Some of them are super dark, like this filly.

Some are much lighter, like this colt.

So my question is: are liver chestnuts always homozygous DP (meaning that the mares who had liver foals from Red King are at least heterozygous for DP themselves) or can you get a liver chestnut from one DP and sooty?
