I recently bred my Vault of Stars stallion with a few smokey black mares and the combination shocked me. These are the two foals that had me scratching my head and full of curiosity.

I had the second one color tested because the Breeders Club wasn't giving me all the disclosure I wanted. I knew she couldn't be silver but that was the first thing that came to my mind. She turned out to be Smokey Grullo Splash Tobiano Appaloosa ( Ee aa CCcr dD gg Ff SstyS PP KittoKit SpsSps LlpL ECA3P+ECA3P+ WF: Medium )

I decided to scan the horse community for similar cases and found quite a few:
Another smokey grullo appaloosa
A smokey black appaloosa
A smokey black appaloosa

They range from the milk chocolate to coffee to sepia. Compared to non-LP smokey black foals - who are all shades of black - with variations of sooty:
Smokey Black
Smokey Black sooty+
Smokey Grullo sooty+

Am I safe to assume that the LP gene expressed with heterozygous cream on a black base is what makes the color turn brown-ish? If so, why does this occur? If not, what is making the foals less black and more brown?

I'm going to try and keep this short but I already know because of my inspiration for this this is going to be a long post. When I was a kid we were given a horse by our farrier. He was a 20yr old gelding. His owner had passed away and had left the gelding to his family but they didn't want him. He was given to use with the understanding he would live out the remainder of his years with us. When the gelding arrived we were told his name was Copper, and it suit him. You could loose a copper penny in his coat. He was the flame horse in every book I read as a kid, in the flesh, standing, living, breathing next to me. He was a gorgeous penny red bay even at 20yrs old. At 25 he was going blind in one eye and had a stoke. Though the stoke didn't kill him the vet said it was pretty bad and he would have a repeat and it was only a matter of time. Though he was up and walking the stoke had taken it toll and his quality of life was seriously hampered. The decisions was made not long after to have him put to sleep. I want to recreate Copper and create a whole line that looks like him. My problem is I have no idea what gene's will help me achieve it. I know obviously I'm looking for bay. But when I search bay I'm left with an endless number of horses in all kinds of shades. The search seems daunting. I need direction. If anyone could help point me to the gene's that could help me achieve this goal I would be grateful.

Hey y'all, I have this stallion who is quite a dark wild bay. He's homozygous sooty, so that may be all it is, but quite a few of his babies are just as dark. I'm wondering if there is DP in there too...

He's homozygous black, so I haven't been able to get a chestnut to color test. What do y'all think? He's my darkest wild bay, so I'm just curious!

http://hj2.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=276182

I've been thinking about colors and patterns to real horses that I would love to own and using that as my start to decide what colors I want to breed for. The above is one of them. I want solid black, or white, bodies with the opposite color in the mane and tail. I have no idea though what genes would create that. Would the splash or other paint genes be the best? Are there specific genes in game that just effect mane and tail color like the silver gene?

Do you own any? Have any favorites? :3 I wanna see! And by the way, how do I go about breeding these guys? Cause I want some!!!!
