There is ben he is a 2 year old pony and by the time I can break him and ride him I might be to hevey but I have started working with him like getting him used to the brushes and halters and stuff like that.

Then I have Kalie who is a 3 year old mare not very well halter broke and a very sweet horse she reminds me of on of my other horses I have rode out there but there's not much that has been done with her yet and I can't break her yet.

Then there is dale she is a 4 year old mare and has a very interesting personality. she is great I'm not quite sure how much work has been done with her but I do know she is slightly halter broke.

so right now I'm at a crossroads I am leaning more towards dale because I would be able to break her probably this summer and I would be able to do a lot more with her. This is Luna (aka Loony) my 11month old Greyhound, she is the biggest cuddle monster ever. I can't recommend greyhounds as a companion enough, lazy, low maintenance cuddle machines is the simple way to describe the breed.






This is Odie my hunting poodle, hes 4yr old and an absolute menace. Poodles may be stereotyped as prissy and stuck up dogs but Odie definitely isn't, hes up for a play fight, demands head rubs and will ignore you when you try to tell him off. He loves trampolines, running, rough play and protecting my younger brother from me tickling him.

It's pretty much all flat, with a slight slope. It's is technically "desert" area, but is pretty green compared to what I usually think of desert..

I saw a lot of animals including a moose and a wild (well, wild/feral reservation) horse!

Had a couple mishaps on my first time going to it though.
For example, if you follow maps it leads you to a HUGE creek that has carved out and overflown (permanently I think) over the road and GPS *REALLY* wants you to try and drive though it! lol
(long story short)
My mom was super excited for me and wanted to go to see it and had somehow convinced me that we should TOTALLY take her car instead of my truck. 8-| long story short, we had to have a tow truck come get her car out of mud after she tried to go around a big puddle, BUT WAIT, that's not all folks, after the tow truck pulled us out his truck got stuck and we had to have a tow truck for the toe truck! They sent out a normal tow truck and a semi tow truck just in case. The normal tow truck got him out no problem. On the way out of there though the second team of tow trucks were speeding (going like 60mph when everyone else drives 35-40mph) and at what used to be a mud puddle the edges were hardened and dry, and going 60mph he Definitely caught some air and ended up in a ditch. We had to have ANOTHER tow truck..
In the end though it's a pretty fun story of how we needed a tow truck, then a team of tow trucks for our tow truck, and then a tow truck for our tow trucks tow truck =))

Suffice to say, being in the middle of nowhere, there is a LOT of improvements and work to be done, but I hope to be moving me and my horseys out there in the next year or two!

One of my friends is home on leave for a couple weeks and yesterday he was shooting a reenactment muzzleloader with a friend or two and it malfunctioned, exploding in his face. He's in the hospital now and heavily sedated after a long surgery. I don't know exactly how he's doing or anything more, but he's pretty bad. The yard is tiny! And it's in the middle if a 14k populated city. But in really determined to make this work even though it's a tight space and I'm about to be a new mom. I'm convinced that I can't be happy without having a garden and some birds.

So first I'll explain my situation. I live in South Dakota right across the boarder of Nebraska. I have a rather small yard, its privacy fence for most of it and will eventually be chain link on the two ends to close it up.
Where I plan to garden is in the back yard behind our garage in the corner of the fence. Without measuring I'd guess it to be about 40 ft X 15ft? I plan to have 4 raised garden boxes and a coop.

From you guys I'd like to know any tips you have for keeping a garden in a backyard. I'm talking anything you can think of whether it's how to properly pull a carrot from the ground or tips on how to keep a garden while pregnant/with a new baby. But the garden isnt my biggest concern. My mother gardens and she is coming down in 2 weeks to help me start.
My main loss is the birds.

I really want to keep some type of bird for eggs and occasionally meat. I originally wanted a few hens unlike the idea of ducks a lot more. Due to space I have considered quail BUT they seem to require a lot more work and need to be kept cooped at all times.
Things I need to know (about ducks and chickens)
Early care: what do brand new birds require? Would I better off buying adult birds or buying chicks from the farm store?
Breeds: what types of breeds would be best?
Feed: what type of feed, how much? Table scrapes? Scavenging?
Eggs/butchering: I don't need birds that lay a ton of eggs just a few. How good are the eggs?
Housing: for summer and more important winter. I'll probably have to have a custom winter roost built. Any tips on this
Breeds: best breeds for a back yard.
Anything extra?
Overall cost:
I do have 2 dogs as well as living with 2 small children (soon to be 5 and 3) as well as a baby in the way. I'll have to deal with security once I pick what to keep

So, I've recently moved interstate to study at uni full time, which itself has been good. I've moved in with my boyfriend and that's been great, but I've had some bad luck with my animals since I've moved.

My cat died a week after I moved. It wasn't completely unexpected, since he was almost eighteen. But he'd been a big part of my life for those eighteen years, and his death was quite sudden. And I felt awful that I wasn't with him. I still do. He really was 'my' cat and he spent a lot of time with me, and I feel guilty for not being there when he passed, (I know it's a bit silly) or even before I moved, since I was so caught up in moving that I didn't spend enough time with him. It's almost like he knew that I wasn't going to come home for a long time, and that it was time for him to go.

Only another couple of weeks later and I get a call from the girl who is leasing my gelding. He's gone very lame, and from her descriptions sounded a lot like a reoccurrence of a serious, but undiagnosed, lameness he had about five years ago. We never could get it diagnosed, since it was somewhere in his hindquarters. Deep tissue, possibly. And since then he hadn't quite been the same even after he came good, which always had me paranoid that he had some serious underlying back/pelvic problem. The girl leasing him loves him just as much as I do, and was bawling on the phone to me saying she thinks he needs retiring, which is disappointing since he's only twelve. For the moment, he's been turned out, with five star care, which is making me feel a bit better. But I'm still heartbroken about it.

And lastsly;
It's taken me almost a month to find somewhere for my other horse to live, but I finally did. I've had her with me for almost three weeks now, and was just settling into a routine of balancing study and riding. She'd been out of work for the best part of three months, so it has taken a while for her to settle in her new environment, but overall it will be good for her. I was a bit slack last week, so she had a few days off. I went out after class yesterday keen to start a solid week of work into her. I find her waiting at the gate, looking a bit sorry for herself.

I look her over, and my heart just drops. She has a large, deep laceration on her hind leg. Instead of spending my afternoon riding, I spend it with the vet. Luckily, she hasn't done any major damage. She narrowly missed her extensor tendon, luckily didn't perforate the joint capsule on her hock, and somehow managed to avoid major blood vessels. How she actually injured herself, is a complete mystery! The paddock is clean, fences all intact. Both me and the property owner have has a bit of a look and all we can think, is that she's gotten caught somehow rolling/lying in her shelter. But there are no marks or blood on the walls so, we really don't know.

So my poor poppet has a few stitches (that might not even hold due to location), and is confined to a yard for a while. Vet says it's going to most likely be a month until I can ride her again, just because of the location of the wound, and that they take so long to heal. :( And of course, she picked a week where I have two uni assignments due, had to pay rent and have to buy more feed for her, to decide to try and amputate her leg and slap me with a vet bill! Damn horses!

You know what they say, these things come in threes! I'm just feeling a bit unlucky and down at the moment. Especially since I've only just started riding regularly again after a few months off. Needed a bit of rant to get it out.
