If you check out the leading accounts you can see this contest is entirely determent right now by who has picked up high point show horses from senior members. That means right now the contest is pure luck and not skill and anyone can rapidly overtake others. The number 1 spot holder has mostly aged 17+ horses and is going to lose a lot of those points so don't give up yet.

I would love for you to post below, what you have learned about playing as a new member.

For me it is very clear that new members need well pointed show horse. It is critical to jump starting a barn. I also am completely set on adding a mini game. Sometimes you just need an extra 1k to finish entering shows. A way you can trickle feed some cash to keep you going when you are out of cash and things to do is a mandatory addition.

Kit mutations have been drastically updated. While you are waiting for me to make a post about later today it here is an updated lethality chart.

Green means a viable foal red means a lethal foal. 1-6 represents the white factor of the foal. The bigger the white factor the greater the risk of deceased foal.

It is very rare that I sell open limited edition genes anymore (been a full year since the last one) and I do not create any new open limited genes anymore at all. So if you are interested in ice genes that are not completely closed this is one of your few chances to nab one. These are still fantasy genes so can not be sold or stood publicly but can be be sold in private chat rooms and via the auction.

New template conversion has begun

Last year we bashed out some very quick site layout edits to get the site at least usable on mobile. The current layout has never been great but it was what I could get with the time I had. The new updated template is finished and I have begun the conversion process.

Rather than flip the whole site at once I am mostly going through page by page. It is not just the layout that is changing but also a bunch of security stuff and user interface things as well.

Going forward, javascript will be required to use the site. I know we have a scant few users that occasionally use the site sans JS. Sorry for the inconvenience but I can not justify having to code everything twice for those few people. It's simply to expensive.

Primary barn size has been doubled for free acounts

All free accounts (no upgrade at all) now have a 40 stall primary barn instead of a 20 stall.

Members are strongly encouraged to fill that with 20 show horses NOT breeding horses. Breeding horses cost money, show horses make you money. (*)

You made need to log out and back in to change your stall count.

The server will have periods of downtime and be completely inaccessible tomorrow morning (Jan 14th). Work will occur between 7am and 10am eastern time and will probably only take up a small period of that time window. While maintenance is going on the server will be completely down (not just closed) and unavailable.

Club/Leaderboard updates

The clubs have seen major updates today.

-They have been converted to the new layout.
-The queries have been changed up, while not necessarily faster they no longer use physical memory to run. That means it won't bog up the server if memory is low.
-The LBs now load asynchronously. The page will load first and then it will get each board one by one. Should make the loading experience much more pleasant. And again keep the server from bogging up.
-Fixed a bug that was not removing horses that no longer qualified from the LB from the board. Viewing their page will now boot them properly.
-Show points lb standings now also work like the stud/mare list. At the moment someone must physically look at the horse's page to update the standing. I will automate this here very shortly but just know that at the moment looking at the horse page is required.

Thank you for an awesome 2017. It was a great adventure. I hope everyone enjoyed all the advent calendar activities and had a great holiday season.

I was going to post a video today but it is so cold that our internet is really struggling. So here is what I was going to let you know:

We have some big plans for HAJ in 2018 and I can't wait to see how much we grow next year. You will very shortly here start seeing layout updates and you can expect server migrations (that means some down time) in the next few weeks as we upgrade our physical server. More info on that as we get it. We will of course be continuing our efforts to increase site wide speed and stability.

Ice 14 "Morning Light" -Closed

This winters ice gene is Morning Light. This gene has a special two part dynamic generation. Both the frost on the legs and the golden orbs of light on the head and neck are dynamically generated. It does add a golden light to the head and a blue light to the tail of all base colors. It does not go over white markings but will change the color of all white horses like cremellos. Ice 14 is dominate.

A Very LaZer Holiday

All the fly kids are like totally talking about that super radical advent calendar. A new door unlocks every day, and behind it the new secret event for the day. There is something going on every day in December. So Wizard!

Here is what you need to know:

The door will turn orange and do a rock'n dance when it is ready to open.
-
The door opens at midnight YOUR time. But the secret behind the door is revealed at midnight GAME time. You may be able to open your door early or late based on your computers clock.
-
Most things behind the door will activate at midnight game time. Sometimes they won't activate until that morning. Just depends on the door.
-
Beyond just the door, the Very Lazer Tack Pack has launched. A new tack item will appear in the tack every day of the month.

Tack Packs are purchased with IV's in the upgrade with game money area.

Also Candy Pony, winter forest backgrounds and **LIGHTS**

Rainbow Riot Thunderstruck! -Closed

Thunderstruck is the 3rd of our rainbow riot genes. All thunderstruck horses are covered in electric blue lightning bolts and have a charged glow. Thunderstruck's glow and bolts are so powerful it ignores interactions will all other genes. All mane and tail options will also glow regardless of what tack pack they are from. It only needs one copy to show and horses with it will have "Thunderstruck" as part of their color name.

I will NOT stack this gene on horses with things from prior sales events.

All About Eras

What are eras and why do we need them?
Eras break up all the horses in the game into groups of peers. These groups track when the foundations of a line were first created. For example all foundation horses created during a set six month period and all their descendents would make up one era. The higher the era number the more recently the line was founded. In the new LB system horses only compete against horses of their own era. That means leader board competition is fair and accessible to everyone. Members who have only played for 6 months can compete on an even level with members who have played for 6 years. Having ever changing eras means that starting new lines is more than just fun, they can be competitive as well.

Why is my horse era zero when it is a foundation?
Eras are not generations. It does not matter if your horse is a foundation or a 10th gen. Its era is based on when the first foundations of its line were created. The point is to encourage the creation of new lines because members who create new lines are our most active and most happy members.

How often does the era change?
The new era will start around every 6 real life months but this figure is not for certain yet. It may be based on how many horses are created.

What era is my horse?
Open up your horse’s page. Just below its age you will see what era that horse belongs to. It will also tell you in the search and in your barn what era a horse is.

What era are we in now?
You can always see what the current era is by looking at the top right corner of the website next to the game clock.

When did Era 1 and Era 2 start?
When this program started new creations between December of 2012 and August 2013 were placed in Era 1. All normal ability foundation horses created since September of 2013 were automatically made Era 2 horses.

Does cloning affect the era of the new horse?
The cloning lab will tell you what era your horse is now and what era the resulting clone will be when you select which horse you wish to clone from the drop down box. Sometimes the era will change. Other times it will not.

Do breeding boosts and exceptional quality affect a horse’s era?
Boosting and exceptional quality skips one generation of breeding effort. To make everything fair all exceptional horses are created with a one era handicap. So if it is era three and you create an exceptional producer that horse will come out as an era two horse. If you boost a horse it also gets a one era handicap. That does not mean boosted and exceptional horses don't get to compete, far from it. Just as golf and horse racing add handicaps to make the playing field more level and more exciting for everyone, so do eras work for the game. We have leader boards for foundations and second generation horses so even though Era 0 is huge and old you can still create an Era 0 horse today and have a chance for it and its offspring to be on the LB.

Can I breed my era x to my era y horse?
Feel free to breed any horse to any other that you wish. Keep in mind though that the lowest era parent sets the era of the foal. If you breed an era 4 stallion to an era 2 mare the foal will be born era 2. If you breed two era 3 horses together the resulting foal will be an era 3. You can cross eras as much and as often as you like.

Are era zero horses worthless?
Not at all. There will always be people wanting and breeding for those era zero horses. In fact with all the clean ups and new leader board systems your horse now has a better chance at the LB then it ever had before. There are hundreds of thousands of era zero horses and people will be breeding them for a very long time to come. Just because a horse is Era 0 does not mean it has to stay in the Era 0 breeders club. You can register your horse for other Color and Pattern Clubs where the competition isn’t as crowded as the Era 0 Club.

Will speed training upset the new Lbs?
Nope. Speed training is only in effect for Era 0 horses. Horses of later eras cannot be speed trained.

What Breeders Clubs does my horse qualify for?
Horses can be entered in up to four Breeders Clubs. There are clubs for each era and for each of the basic colors and patterns in the game. There are also clubs for certain non-testable patterns like Gulastra Plume and Kit Promoter.

What leader boards are associated with each Breeders Club?
Each Breeders Club has 6 leader boards horses compete for. They are
Top Producing Stallion,
Top Producing Mare,
Highest PT of the Year (foals),
Points Earned by Foundation Horses,
Points Earned by 2nd Gen Horses,
Points Earned by Lined Horses (all other generations combined).

Each leader board has 25 places. At the end of a game year, for any leader board that is filled, that is if it has 25 horses listed, horses in the top 10 places will receive an award that will be visible on their records pages. First place horses get a trophy. The other nine receive ribbons. All awards remain permanently at the top of the records page.

I have returned triumphant from Orlando. I spent way to much money and generally had an great time. I even got stuck on not one but TWO rides. :D It was AWESOME! I'll do a video here soon on how everything went.

Just wanted to warn everyone though that Fufflepuff (who stayed home with dad) was rather sick while I was gone and we are going into see the Dr. this morning. I also have vertigo pretty bad this morning. This is normal for me. I have a balance disorder that is aggravated by planes, elevators, and "the singing voices of children from all over the world". Normally takes 24 hours to clear, but until it does, typing is rough. It may take me a bit to get caught up on everything. Thunderstruck orders are first priority though.

Thanks for being awesome while I was gone! Let's get back to serious Holiday time!

Hey there gang. Can you believe we are in the homestretch, with 2017 coming to a close in just a few weeks? That's nuts! What's even more nuts is 2017 is already our best year EVER.

It's no secret that over the years I have had a lot of health issues. I've had pinched nerves that caused my hand to shake uncontrollably if I worked. I've had extreme fatigue from an untreated autoimmune disorder. I had a really hard pregnancy with a 6 week stay in the hospital. In the 11 years I have run this business you guys have really been there for me. I am so happy to report that this year has also been my best health year EVER! My autoimmune disorder is very well manged these days. I'm at my lowest weight I can remember (less than in 6th grade! Can you believe that?) Our tiny NICU baby who struggled to even breath, is now a rambunctious and opinionated toddler, who loves to steal my scarves and high heeled shoes already! (Shoe was even her very first word.)

This year has not been without struggles. We started the year fighting server instability and random database lock ups and crashes. You guys stuck through that with us. We converted our entire database over to a new and more modern style of database. That allowed us to now have triple secure backups to run every single night and stopped the random lockup crashes. The new database style however drastically slowed down the server. It has been a long process getting it back up to speed, and I feel like we are FINALLY getting there, but oh man has there been awkward issues along the way. You guys stuck through that with us. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding. It has been really frustrating for us and I know very frustrating for you too. Despite that you guys have weathered it with grace and understanding that is unheard of for an online community. You even continued to financially support the game while it was happening.

Not only have you all gone above and beyond to support us, you have gone above and beyond to support each other. I in particular want to call out the members I have been seeing helping new players get started with advice and horses. I have seen you guys buy upgrades and barns for each other. I have seen you work together to rescue accidentally misplaced horses. Once again our members are coming together to run secret santa. Something you guys do out of love for one another with zero input from me. This community is amazing and I am so honored to have provided the place for you all to come together.

So what is in store for 2018? You may have noticed that I have been taking the month of November a little easy. That's because rather than adding new features I have been monitoring the database logs looking for problem spots. With speeding up the server it's not a mater of just finding a slow page, because pages can be deathly slow or super fast completely depending out the amount of server memory available. Finding these problem areas is a slow pealing away of onion layers figuring out who is a memory hog. It's a lot better than it was, and I have learned a ton about what sort of things make the server slow and what works well.

I have been stabilizing the server and building the knowledge for what is coming in 2018. A total code rewrite. Just recently I rewrote the show entry system and I am sure those with upgrades can attest to how much faster the new code is. HAJ is an 11 year old site. Not only has web programing advanced a lot in that time, I have learned a lot in that time. The whole site is being modernized, both in the back-end (with better database systems) and in the front end with modern HTML5 JavaScript driven pages. The end result will be a much faster, more powerful and more "stable" site. I'm really looking forward to this project.

Other 2018 projects (like that wasn't enough :D) include hardware updates. We are looking to migrate HJ2 onto it's own physical box. Right now both game servers "really instances" run on the same physical computer at a data center in Texas. We will be getting a second computer that will run HJ2 exclusively. Once they are different computers, if one server goes down the other will still be up. Once HJ2 is moved off the server we are on now (future home of just HJ1) will be getting some major hardware updates of it's own. Between the new more powerful computers/servers running the site and the full code overhaul we should be humming in 2018 and ready to face the next decade of HuntAndJump!

Turning off money tracking for showing

Not surprisingly showing is causing too many payment log entries and causing server slowness. Mostly at log in. HJ1 is the biggest culprit (I deleted their logs) but HJ2 was definitely having some issues as well. For the mean time logging of show entry and show payment data has been turned off.

Not sure when you will see that again. I will probably move it onto it's own system in the future. Getting the server back up to full speed is my priority.

Rainbow Riot Plaid And Watercolor: for sale through October 31st! | CLOSED

I have created a whole new family of genes for this years Fall Festival. Rainbow Riot genes (marked by the gene R) all manipulate pigment to make rainbow horses in different combos.

::PLAID R^pl::

The plaid gene burns out stripes through a horses' natural pigment layers. It also adds stripes of a random rainbow color to the horse. There is a lot of random variation and re rolling can result in minimal color or very large amounts of color. Only one copy needed to show.

Plaid can be purchased for $25 US per one copy.

::WATERCOLOR R^wt::

Watercolor converts the normal red and black pigment layers into rainbow color layers. The more pigment variation to start the more colors you will see. Agouti based colors, duns etc will give you the best results as you see the most pigment variation on those. Sooty + highly recommended with these. Only one copy needed to show.

The GM Lab had a huge update today. First special edits now have prices listed so people can stop asking about them. #:-S I have added in the ability to edit white factor, weight, and height to your horses.

Price for weight and height updates are only 1GMT each for a limited time. I will set them to 2 GMTs sometime soon. Get your edits in asap. I will not announce when the price will change.

GMTs are 25% off. They are on sale till I get around to taking them off of sale. I won't announce when so get them while the price lasts!

You must post below with an image that is exactly 500 X 333 pixels and .png format.
It must compliment the art style of the game.
It must be digitally painted/drawn by you. Absolutely NO photo manipulation.
Make sure horses look correct on this background, if they look strange floating awkwardly I won't use it.
You must be the sole creator of the art work.
No copying any copyrighted designs. Create something unique.
I will select as many or as few winners from both servers as I want to use on the site.
Only fall themed creations will be accepted.

Altererd horses with closed genes can now be sold via the public auction house

When I completely closed sharing of new genes we were still trying to figure out what was going to work best. Nexus and the lower number ice genes have shown that we can can have a healthy market sharing altered horses via the public auction house.

This change lets those who can not afford closed genes to be still own and enjoy them, even if they still can't breed them themselves.
It also allows those who purchase the gene to make some money from sales on it if they so choose. It is nice to let people have some return on investment, and some incentive to breed super pretty fantasy horses.
Since no one call sell intact horses to those who do not own the gene, the closed genes will never spread into the general population and dilute the value of intact horses.

No one but the original breeder can unalter or clone a horse, so there is no concern that a purchased altered horse will become an intact horse.
There may be some initial price spike but nexus and ice sales have proven prices will stay reasonable on these altered horses.
I will be adding some additional safeguards to prevent accidental breeding or intact horse sales via buddy chat/breeding lab since I expect some people to think that owning a gelding means you are allowed to breed the gene. :-w
These safeguards are not yet in place, please keep up the good work you have done so far in making sure you don't sell to those who do not own foundations with the gene.

Mass Show Entry Changes and Auto Show Changes

Showing has continued to cause server slowness. I've made a few tweeks today to help ease congestion.

For Mass Enter (entering whole barns)

It will only enter 100 horses at a time max. This should keep the server from using up to much memory for everyone and also reduce the risk of session locking for those with large barns.
If your barn is bigger than 100 stalls just run it more than once.
It will only enter a horse once a day. Spreading entries out through the week will help prevent the early in the week sluggishness we have seen.
You can hand enter a horse to show it a second time or wait till the next day to mass enter again.

Just a note on auto enter that I have set it to run in even smaller cycles more frequently through the day to reduce the load.
If a horse was auto entered already that day you can't mass enter it too.
